A FLURRY OF GALLERY SHOWS

B A N N E D

"The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame," intoned Oscar Wild.

Who could imagine that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Gone with the Wind, Leaves of Grass, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Where the Wild Things Are were considered controversial and provocative in their time and banned?  A new exhibit at The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission COMMUNITY GALLERY showcases the work of 18 New Mexico artists who were invited to explore censorship and the written word. It's a fun exhibit and full of surprises.

UNDERSEE/SUBLIMINAL AND SUBLIME

CITY OF MUD (SEE MY RECENT CHASING POST) is a new gallery/interiors space that is a must see. Their just-opened installation/show is a visual 'undersea' romp; Jacque Cousteau would have been delighted!

Cleverly curated with artifacts and decor that echo a dreamy aquatic and subconscious theme.

Scrumptious jewelry designed to look as if it were pulled from an ancient undersea chest of treasures.

cating music of John Witham and Rusty Kirkland added to the ambiance of the evening...

JIM VOGEL
Poems in oil

I stopped by BLUE RAIN GALLERY to see Santa Fe artist JIM VOGEL'S latest show.  Each of his vibrant paintings tells a story of the land, culture and common man's struggle. Many depict New Mexican folklore and cross-cultural myths that have been told for generations.

And his beautifully-crafted, signature frames - charred wood, tin, hand-carved wood, antique bird cage - capture these stories wonderfully.
