ALEXANDER GIRARD - MID-CENTURY AMERICAN DESIGNER

The Girard Family - Courtesy of the Museum

Architect, interior/furniture/industrial/textile designer,Alexander Girard and his wife Susan, traveled the world and indulged their keen eye and passion for folk art. When they found an artist that created wondrous objects, they would buy not one or two or three pieces, but the  entire collection.

By the time  they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early 1960s, they had amassed an astounding collection of over 100,000 pieces of Folk Art from more than 100 different nations. In 1978, they donated that collection to Santa Fe's Museum of International Folk Art.

And, when you meander through the Girard Wing of the Museum - especially for the first time - it's like seeing the Grand Canyon; your brain can't process the magnitude of what your eyes are seeing - a visual extravaganza. The gigantic room is a labyrinth of showcase after showcase of folk art  - depicting charming vignettes in stunning detail.

I could take a thousand photos, but I tend to wander to my favorite window showcasing delicate, beguiling Asian figures...

SIMPLY WONDERFUL...But I had come to the Museum to see Alexander
Girard's 'other' talents - furniture, residential & restaurant interiors (including Santa Fe's COMPOUND RESTAURANT), textiles, corporate identity, and a myriad of his other visual designs. Here's a peek at the Museum's latest exhibit:
