"For me, creating art is to invent a language that can allow us to see the changes in human history, human relations and
in the human mind."
SANTA FE ARTIST, Carlos Carulo - originally from Chile - is a passionate guy, and his colorful studio is filled with many of those passions. Plants, vintage rugs, piles of books everywhere, and paintings - on the walls, on his easel and stacked in neat piles...waiting. He's a reader, loving poetry and science equally -
a combination that I found intriguing.
For the past several years his paintings have embraced PHYSICS AND
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, and last year he was invited by the UC DAVIS
Biology Department to meet with scientists using advanced microscopic
technology. "They were amazed at how my artwork resembled the
imagery they viewed though the electron microscope." recalls Carlos.
This unexpected feedback became a catalyst for his imagination and
research into cellular biology and nanotechnology, resulting in a new
series of work - COMPLEXITY THEORY PROJECT.- large-scale canvases
revealing his passion for evocatively interpreting these complex
systems.
Q. Can you explain COMPLEXITY THEORY?
A. "I'd like to say that artists, like scientists, explore phenomena
using three basic steps: Observation, Understanding, and
Interpreting. Complexity theory is the study of complex, chaotic systems and the way in which order and disorder fuse into
pattern and structure.

Then he creates a richly evocative under-painting. The process, he says,
can have unpredictable outcomes resulting from expressive gestures
and the random application of carefully chosen pigments, pastels and
paint. From this explosion of color, he explains, "an organized, self-
contained universe emerges that has structure, order and meaning."
AND 'TESLA' IS A GREAT HELP WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE!
