Chasing Santa Fe: A NATIVE NEW YORKER - A CONTEMPORARY SILENT FILM

SHOWING DURING INDIAN MARKET WEEK...

"A major mini masterpiece..."

This award-winning, thirteen-minute silent film was shot with a vintage 1924 hand-crank Cine Kodak camera in 2011 - before, during and after 9/11. Director/cinematographer Steve Bilich filmed Shaman Trail Scout "Coyote" taking a a journey from New York City's Inwood Park - where the island of Manhattan was traded for beads and booze, down a native trail, now Broadway, then into lower Manhattan, once a sacred burial ground and now Wall Street.

A BIT OF HISTORY...

So the story goes...In 1626 the Lenni-Lenape Nation - an indigenous people of the Northeastern woodlands also known as the Delaware - 'sold/traded' the island of Manhattan to Dutch settlers for $24 or 60 guilders - worth of goods, around a thousand dollars in today's currency.

The name comes from the Lenape language - mana-hata meaning land of many hills.

PATRICIA WOLF ZUBER - Flutist with the Santa Fe Opera &

GREG ZUBER - Marimba & Percussion - principal percussionist

with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra

They will also play live during the screening of the film scored by William Susman.

I met with the Zubers a few weeks ago at the San Miguel Chapel to talk about the film/ concert and, of course, to take a few photos. They brought their instruments and I had a bit of fun photographing them and the interior of this 17th century Spanish Colonial Mission Church - the oldest known church in the continental

United States.

What struck me when I did some research on the church, was that when the Dutch were buying the island of Manhattan from the Lenape Indians (1616), oral history holds that the San Miguel Mission Church was being built (1610) by Tlaxcalan Indians, who came to New Mexico from Old Mexico in 1598 with a Spanish contingent

led by Don Juan de Onate.
