JANE SAUER GALLERY - PLAYING WITH DOLLS

A New York art dealer was overheard telling a client: If you have only 15 minutes in Santa Fe, you must go to the Jane Sauer Gallery. Indeed, if you're passionate about contemporary art, this internationally-recognized gallery - nestled along Canyon Road - is a must visit. And, this past weekend they showcased work by my favorite Doll Artist - Charla Khanna. I bought one of Charla's extraordinary dolls 30-years ago and have been following her career ever since. A long-time resident of Taos, Charla has been showing at the Jane Sauer Gallery for the past four years. I've tried to capture each doll's wonderment with my lens...

And, oh the lovely embellishments and thousands of tiny stitches placed just so with such purpose and care - creating a story from fabric and thread.

SWAIA - Winter Market Celebration

The  Fifth Annual Southwestern Association for Indian Arts Winter Market showcased one hundred and thirty brilliant artists. If you've never experienced either the summer or winter SWAIA market you're in for a lovely visual treat. Jemez Pueblo artist, Teri Cajero hand painting a diminutive friendship pot.

Half Irish - half Native American - Sean "Rising Sun"  Flanagan of the Wahleah's Taos Pueblo, makes simply beautiful drums from deer, elk and buffalo hides.  How do they sound? Haunting and heart stopping.

   

   

Who knew that Yucca could be so ethereal and malleable.

But, in the deft hands of Zuni basket weaver Rebeca Lasiloo, Yucca is split, dyed and woven into delicately-patterned baskets. See her work at the A:shiwi A:wan Museum & Heritage Center

American Indian Artist -  Debra K. Box - created this amazing beaded Tea Cozy

Hopi Woodcarver, Stetson Honyumptewa, works with cottonwood and an electric drill and the end result are sculptures that look as if they've just emerged  from an ancient Forest.

And Navajo artist,Sheldon Harvey, carves colorful, feathered creatures.
