I took in the Edible Art Tour (EAT) on Friday evening, part of the weekend ArtFeast event that celebrates food, galleries and Santa Fe's youth. Forty galleries, both on Canyon Road and downtown, paired with some of Santa Fe's top chefs, restaurants and caterers to present snazzy hors'doeuvres, desserts and lots of fun.

Folks grazed for three hours enjoying nibbles and wonderful art. Some of the gallerists themed their event - a swarthy Captain Hook greeted you at one gallery, Scottish kilts at another, and La Dolce Vita turned up as well. And there was music in the air everywhere - Spanish guitars, marimbas, violins, and Santa Fe's own, Bill Hearn. I tried to catch the gist of this wonderful evening with my camera.

- Another side trip - 4 days Chasing L.A. -

The Getty has been called the modern 'Acropolis' and when you take the tram up the hillside and come upon this jutting, curvaceous, very white museum and its spectacular perch overlooking Santa Monica, Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, you understand the comparison.

Built by Pritzker prise-winning architect Richard Meier, the Getty comprises six buildings on 110 acres, and the beautiful museum houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, European and American photographs, and decorative arts.

I started taking photographs and realized that the wonderful dichotomy of the stark exterior and opulent interior decorative arts wing would make a playful visual essay. So here goes:

- This is the second post from my recent trip to Tucson -

Down a dirt road in Nogales, Arizona, just fifty-feet from the high steel fence that snakes along the Mexican border, is an extraordinary hacienda compound owned by Edward Holler and Samuel Saunders. Holler's grandfather built the original stone and adobe house in 1912, and after inheriting the property, Holler built the larger, many-roomed house that is filled with Spanish Colonial antiques, artifacts and treasures brought back from their travels along the ancient trade routes of the world. These two intrepid travelers - they go on buying trips six times a year - are antique and decorative art dealers extraordinaire, and when you walk through the outer doors into the courtyard/pool area you know that you are about to begin an unforgettable visual adventure.

Every room is like an intimate museum space where the curator has taken exquisite care in placing each piece so that it is singular but also integral to the room's interior design.

When you step into Laura Sheppherd's gorgeous Atelier in downtown Santa Fe, you'll find frothy wedding gowns and luscious evening wear, and you immediately sense that you've entered an elegant wonderland. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in NY, Laura became enamored with antique fabrics and historical design elements. Many of her creations reflect that passion - corsets from the 19th century, sensuous, bias-draped gowns from the 1930's and silk screened and hand printed devore velvet creations - created in her Santa Fe studio - that resonate old world graphic designs.

Her color palate is exquisite, reflecting all the hues of nature - sky, sunsets, flowers, mountains, water. "I saw that this beauty was for me to interpret into clothing so that women could wear their beauty on the outside as well as the inside," says Laura, who wants her clients to literally walk in beauty.

She collects wonderful vintage lace, often layering the pieces
for a collage effect.

Occasionally Chasing Santa Fe travels...hence the post on this gorgeous church in Tucson, Arizona. I spent four lovely days there and will be posting about another amazing find soon. C. Whitney-Ward

As you drive along the highway - ten miles south of Tucson - a magnificent white mission church appears mirage-like out of nowhere. Its Mexican Baroque facade beckons, and as you drive towards this wonder - tucked onto the Tohono O'odham San Xavier Indian Reservation - you're transported back in time to the 18th century.

This marvelous church was built between 1783 and 1797 by a large workforce of O'odham Indians under the direction of Franciscan missionaries. The architect -Ignacio Gaona - was brought up from Mexico as was a painter and sculptor, whose names have been lost over time.

By 1797 there were only enough funds to complete one of the bell towers; the east tower was never built. All work stopped and the church opened its doors for services. But the entire church - exterior and interior - has been beautifully restored, and when you step inside, every surface is carved and painted and you will feel amazement and awe.

The ceilings soar and are filled with richly-painted imagery.

Boldly - carved angels and saints surround and stand watch. Every conceivable inch is swathed in beauty. A large number of the religious statues were created in guild workshops and brought to the mission from Mexico.

The simplest renderings in the church are the understated crosses representing the stations of the cross.

The scalloped wooden pews are striking when juxtaposed against

the stunning graphics along the walls...

When you peer down the aisle, the ornate altar with its large portrait

of St. Francis Xavier takes center stage.

And candles are everywhere; integral to this holy place.

Every detail is remarkable and a tribute to the original architect, artist, sculptor and O'odham laborers who collaborated on this captivating church.

Native American Flutes - La Fonda Indian Shop

If I had to compare the sound of a Native American flute with nature, I'd say it

is like hearing a loon's solitary call - mysterious and haunting.

So it was a treat to capture photos of some beautiful flutes at the

INDIAN SHOP & GALLERY at La Fonda on the Plaza.

This wonderful shop is filled with Southwest treasures, but their offering of Native American Lakota-style flutes is truly worth a visit.

Kyle Smith, a professional flute player and son of the shops owner, is a

font of knowledge when it comes to these handsome hand-made flutes. And, while

I snapped away, he played music. It was lovely...

The flutes that they carry are made from a melange of wood - eastern red cedar, Alaskan yellow cedar, walnut, and gorgeous burl woods - the most expensive and hardest to work with.

The designs are simple, functional and beautiful. And each has a distinctive fetish that sits on the flute's block wrapped with a strip of deer hide.

"Building Native American flutes is pure physics," says Smith, explaining that

the 'key' of each flute is determined by several design factors. The flute is not just one long chamber, - it has two - and the breath blown into the flute is forced into a flue (see opening below shown when ornamental fetish/block is slid back). That air then hits the far side of the hole and is split in two which causes it to vibrate.

These two vibrating currents enter a second section called the

sound chamber. The player's fingers then cover or uncover the finger

holes which change the length of the tube and the pitch. And, says
Smith, the diameter of the flute opening and the thickness of the walls
can determine the sound as well.

Simply Beautiful - Traditional Spanish Crosses

Artist Robert Duran is a native Santa Fean and his roots run deep. "My family has been here since the 1600's," says Duran who works with metal and iron

but also creates traditional Spanish wooden crosses fashioned from

re-cycled old growth pine.

When I told a friend I was going to 'shoot' a contemporary dance group, she

told me to capture their faces. They're doing what they love to do - dancing their passion. Their faces will be glowing. She was right.

The Belisama School of Contemporary Dance offers instruction in ballet, modern, jazz, and Irish dance technique and choreography, as well as performance opportunities to students age 3 to 18. On Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, twenty-five students will be presenting their Spring Repertory Concert at James A. Little Theater at 7pm. It will be eclectic, colorful and fun.

“This spring performance will present an eclectic mix of choreographers and styles, to let the dancers experience many different ways of working and gaining exposure to variety,"says Belisama Artistic Director, Annie Kohn (lft). The Spice Lady

When you step inside Barbara Nass' new shop - THE SPICE LADY - your enveloped in the perfume of every imaginable spice - sending your senses soaring. Just open three months, this airy and orderly shop is a veritable repository of both familiar and exotic spices like galangal, ground sumac and fennel pollen. The latter says Nass, is quite lovely sprinkled on just-cooked potatoes tossed with goat cheese.

Open shelves are filled with flavored salts, curries, teas, extracts, spices, herbs and dried exotic mushrooms.

I'm a dedicated tea drinker and look forward to sampling the Earl Grey teas, but

also some of the more unusual teas that Barbara has found.

LEONEL CAPPARELLI IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WOOD.

He gathers it, slices great chunks of it into beautifully-grained boards, and marries them with gathered Colonial architectural elements to make unique, one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories. A native of Uruguay - born to Italian parents - Leonel moved to Santa Fe in 1986 and opened his shop. Over the years he has honed his skills, stretched his design sensibilities and cultivated clients. He has done collections and commissioned pieces for Ralph Lauren, Bloomingdale's and the Max Factor family. Here in Santa Fe you can see his work at the Inn of the Anasazi, Hotel Loretto and most recently, the St. Francis Hotel.

Leonel collects New Mexican and Mexican antiques and his great barn-of-a-building, tucked just off E. Rodeo Road, is brimming with eclectic finds - many that he has painstakingly restored.

This beautiful religious statue was found in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and is in the throes of being restored.

A soft brush begins the process of sweeping away layers of loose paint. Then the real work begins - filling and repairing cracks, re-painting and restoring her to

her near-original self.

Usually clients will come in, Leonel explains, roam around and find an artifact they would like incorporated into a piece of furniture. Occasionally they will bring in a piece that they love and want re-cycled into something quite different - a treasured headboard into a table, for example. Leonel will do drawings...

And once approved, he and his staff create the piece in a huge workspace, filled with electric saws, sanders and stacks of just-cut wood panels.

What emerges is a beautiful amalgam of woods and a unique

hand-wrought treasure. Rescued from the Past - Preserved for the Future.

The Thrill of the Hunt - Santa Fe Consignment Shops

I love consignment shops, but they're not all created equal. The Beat Goes On, owned

by Suzie Kriger, is a cut above. I just discovered it about 6 months ago, probably

because it's tucked into a small off-the-street building on Guadalupe and you

have to know it's there. But there's free parking out front

which makes it a snap to run in and peruse.

"This is a place to come and have fun - it's a community,"

says Kriger who's lived in Santa Fe for the past 16 years and been active

in retail for fifty years. She began when she was five, she assures me!

And Kriger's pal Beatrice, was born the day the store

opened 13 years ago and is always at her side.

If you live in Santa Fe The Beat is a great place to bring your stuff to sell and re-cycle.

And if you're just visiting, it's a great place to pick up

some Santa Fe duds to take home.

Men's clothes too. And, lots of faux fur.

They stock some nifty couture clothes and I always make a bee-line to the New Arrivals section.

I first met Orren at SOFA sporting his signature glasses and a wild necklace

made entirely of puzzle pieces. I thought he was a display - but he

turned out to be a fascinating guy who is always on the lookout for outsider art and BLING. When I stopped by WINK the other day - Orren and Robert's shop at

Sanbusco - it was filled with eclectic, one-of-a-kind stuff that you

just won't find anywhere else. Lots of pampering body care products - Kiehl's

and Floris of London - and jewelry by Alexis Bitar,

Jean Belancourt , Lori Kirsch, and Orren.

Meandering the High Road to Taos

I got a hankering to meander the High Road to Taos - a 56-mile drive that

takes you into undulating hills, high desert, forests, mountains, and

tiny, Spanish land-grant and Pueblo Indian villages.

It's a beautiful scenic byway that begs to be photographed.

A Gem in Bernalillo - The Range Cafe

THIS IS A MUST-GO-KINDA-PLACE

The Range Cafe is just plain fun and delicious. It opened in 1992 in a vintage building that has been around since the early 30's. As you step into the restaurant,

you're deliciously assaulted by the pastry display - luscious cakes, creme brulee
and other delights that are baked from scratch daily.

The decor is funky and inviting...

The Menu is extensive

Breakfast is served until 3pm daily. My kind of place. I ordered the Range Roundup - a large home baked biscuit topped with crumbled bacon and sausage, scrambled eggs, white cheddar cheese, with range fries con queso and pinto

beans on the side.

Not my typical meal, but, it was amazing. Fresh, perfectly cooked, wonderful flavors.

The service was professional and friendly...

And while I took a break from my biscuits & gravy, I stepped into the Cafe's Saloon/Bar - The Lizard Rodeo Lounge. A great weekend destination!

There's a nifty stage offering live music Friday and Saturdays.

Check their website for a schedule.

And, there's a wonderful shop showcasing contemporary Native American jewelry, prints and pottery from many of the Pueblos. The shop also has a great collection of vintage pottery that gives the feel of being in a museum.

are amazing. Actually everything was amazing...

HOLLIE AMBROSE is a jewelry designer and a sculptor and has an intuitive eye for interior design. Her jewelry is colorful and wonderfully playful, created from vintage beads and baubles and stuff that all seems to scream look at me and smile! .A leg from a vintage doll swings on a lovely necklace of black jet and glass beads...a doll-size tea pot anchors a necklace of glass leaves and tiny, tiny beads.

The metal shoes are from an old monopoly set.

Her broaches are charming...

And Hollie's home is just as colorful and inviting as her jewelry, filled with

things that she has passionately collected over the years.

"I love the art of collecting and personally know most of the artists whose work I have. When I find a new piece, it's like falling in love.; my heart beats really fast."

Strolling through Hollie's spacious home is like being in a gallery, each piece is placed in just the right place, complimenting a wall or tabletop perfectly.

How do I know? Well, I've spent the past week stuffing myself with donuts oozing raspberry jam and lemon curd, donuts topped with white chocolate and pistachios, not to mention the s'more donut crowned and filled with marshmallows.

WHOO'S DONUTS opened along Cerrillos - next to the ChocolateSmith and just down from Whole Foods - in October and these delicious gourmet
donuts - with imaginative taste combinations - are just plain GOOD!

with a lovely lemon ganache...

Yes, that is bacon - chile bacon and maple bacon with dark
chocolate - to be more precise - atop these delicious donut bars.

Owners Kari and Jeff Keenan (they also own The Chocolate Smith next door)

are committed to organic ingredients and coming up with nifty taste combinations. And part of the fun of Whoo's Donuts is

you never know what delightful minglings you'll discover.

When I wasn't consuming donuts from Whoo's, I was tasting some smashing pastries, etc. from DULCE BAKERY - located just down from Trader Joe's.

It's a fun, contemporary space opened a year ago by Kirk Barnett and Dennis Adkins. Kirk handles the business end and Dennis the pastry end, and together they've

pulled off a great foodie destination where you can sip and nibble all day. Everything is baked from scratch and they only use natural and local ingredients.

They serve memorable, memorable coffee drinks. Frothy and rich...

Splendid, thick slices of Quiche; light and chock full of great fillings.

Pinwheel danish with rich jam centers... savory, savory scones, yummy cupcakes, and their coconut cake is extraordianry...

And the best...I mean the best muffins I've had in recent history!

The SPANISH TABLE is filled with Wonderful stuff - hard-to-find spices, myriad olive oils, tins of sardines, jars of fruit from the Chilean Desert, packets of squid ink, smoked Spanish paprika, Moroccan olives, cazuelas , exotic sea salts, steel paella pans - some as big as a kiddie swimming pool - tagines , and just about anything that even hints of Spanish culinary foodstuff or equipage.

And lots and lots of cookbooks...

The tins and packaging are so gorgeous, you'll be tempted to buy a few just to plop on an open shelf in your kitchen.

I go to this fun-crazy show every year and it keeps getting better and better. It never ceases to amaze me how artists can make

something nifty and collectible out of a toaster...

A coffee pot...

An old decoy...

But they do, and their capacity for turning re-cycled odds and ends into

vibrant art makes for a very fun afternoon.

And opening night, there was a re-cycled fashion show.

Very clever and very chic.

store is filled to the brim with simply lovely stuff.

Missoni robes and towels, amazing hand-woven & hand-dyed throws

by Santa Fe artist Gretel Underwood, Oaxacan rugs by Sergio Martinez...

Owners Barbara Lenihan and Betsy Hackman know how to search out
the unusual and hook up with and support artist's cooperatives
around the world. Vintage finds are brought back and with
the help of a local seamstress are turned into pillows and
other delights for the shop.

When I met Santa Fe Fiber Artist Kathryn Roth she was wearing one of her amazing felted-wool and chiffon creations and I knew that I had to see her entire collection and to photograph it. Kathryn lost both her parents a year ago and she began making these beautiful, ruffled scarf/shawls to indulge in a quiet time to grieve and celebrate her parent's life.

"The first shawl that I made I wore to a wedding and got six custom orders," says Kathryn. Of course she let everyone try it on and that did the trick. "No one wanted to take it off; It leaves a lovely memory on your skin of being the perfect temperature."

She uses traditional felting techniques and gorgeous, soft 'top' Merino wool that offers the longest and straightest hairs. The wool is carded and then layered in varying colors. Soap and water is worked through the layers until the fibers cling together. Then rectangles of silk chiffon are worked into this marriage of fibers.

They pack like a dream and can be worn wrapped as a scarf or draped as a shawl. And the colors look like nature personified.
